First Thoughts Review:
Becoming Branches Ep's instrumentation has a stripped back, un-fussy, beautifully crafted sound. The female vocals have a haunting, innocent quality to them which compliment the tone of Rob's voice perfectly. The harmonies are subtle but suit the overall feel to this stunning EP.
'Take You Home' is a duet. She asks a question, he replies. She wants him to be with her. She feels he is wasting his love on the wrong girl. Deep down he wants her too.
'Under The Waves' She is singing about a love lost. She wishes she could be completely alone with her love. It's not until you get to almost the end of the song that you realise that her love has passed on and she is learning to cope without him and longs for the day when they can be re-united.
Rob takes the lead vocal in 'The Travelling Harpist' is about the lonely life on the road as a musician until he finds that special someone along the way. I think he feels somewhat trapped in that cycle. He thinks about the future. Being settled down with her and having a house and roses round the door.
'Never Knew What Loving Was' is a song that I feel that I know from somewhere. It is another great song. It's about someone who feels rejected by everyone. She was attracted to the wrong type of man, and then she meet that someone special who she want to run too as fast as she could, because she never know what loving was until she had met him.
The EP finishes with 'Live Right Here' which is a beautiful ballad. They are so happy being in that moment of time that they wish they could stay there forever. Very relatable as every human being on the planet has wished this at some time in their lives.
About The Band
Based in the New Forest in the south of England, Becoming Branches are a Country-Folk-Pop trio blending acoustic sounds and soaring harmonies in an enchanting mix of creative and heartfelt originals. Winners of the 2019 Wimborne Folk Festival Live Award; their debut EP is out now!
Having played together in various acts over the years; Jaz, Rob and Hannah formed Becoming Branches in the summer of 2018. Initially starting out as a covers band performing at private parties and weddings, the trio soon starting writing their own songs and creating their own sound. These original songs were then taken out on the road, being shared at open mics and showcases throughout the Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire area.
In 2019, work began on their debut EP which was recorded at Basement Studio in Dorset and produced by Sean Hatton with Rob. The week before it’s public release; Jaz, Rob and Hannah held a launch party at a beautiful barn conversion in the New Forest. The venue was packed with family and friends and as well as a live performance from the band, the night featured some of the stories behind the songs.
Preceded by the first single Take You Home, their self-titled debut EP was released in March of this year and achieved over 3000 streams in the first month. After being named the BBC Introducing Solent Record of the Week and gaining further radio play both locally and online, Becoming Branches have been getting wonderful reviews and are excited to keep sharing their music with an ever growing fan base.
