EP Review: Hicktown Breakout

Hicktown Breakout are a 5-piece country rock back from Bristol who pride themselves on creating original, modern country music with an upbeat rocky edge and engaging lead and backing vocals. The band bring an eclectic mix of country, rock and blues with modern influences including Chris Stapleton, Luke Bryan, Blackberry Smoke and Garth Brooks.
Working with 2019 UK Country Artist of the Year ‘Danny McMahon’ & Puzzlemaker Studio’s, Hicktown Breakout released ‘Jo Lee’ which reached number 29 in the iTunes Country Single Charts and will be the lead single on their debut EP which is now available to pre-order!
The first track on the EP 'Roses' is written from the prospective of a man who has recently started in a new relationship which seems a little more one-sided. The song tells of him letting her know how he feels and hoping she will reciprocate those feelings before the roses die. It is a great, upbeat guitar fuelled number with an old school melodic groove - a traditional country love song.
The lead single 'Jo-Lee' is about meeting the girl you were always meant to meet and how she changed your life for the better and made you a better person. The melodies & harmonies created by the band in this song is a very prominent feature - the lyrical contend coincides brilliantly with the instrumentation and melody - definitely competes for my favourite on the EP.
'Drink it Down' is a classic country-rock song with a strong guitar riff and drum beat. Think Brother's Osborne and Eric Church. The rawness in Darren's voice fits this song perfectly.
'You Lied' is an angry heart-break song - all those things that were said, the promises and commitments, came crashing down. The storytelling in Hicktown Breakout's songs is definitely a strong point. With every song, and particularly this one, picturing the story as the song moves is effortless - a very important feature of country music.
"Hicktown Breakout manage to effortlessly introduce themselves to the country crossover scene and give fans a real glimpse into what they are looking to achieve sonically as a group. With a stand-out, eclectic blend of country, rock, and blues the EP will have something for everyone". Laura Klonowski.
