When drummer Ollie first told me about this gig I thought it would be in a pub or a club so I was surprised to learn that DARCY were headlining the sunday night of a country and western weekend. This meant we couldn't just turn up so I gave them a ring and we were made very welcome. I decided to invite Redroad FM DJ Simon Birds who hosts the UK Country Music Showcase and is really enthusiastic about the British country music scene and Charlotte West who did some videoing for us. It was also lovely to catch up with Tina West again too.
We arrived as the band (Darcy Crawford, Sam Taylor, Oliver Hopkins, Charlie Kay & Joe Starr) were setting up their gear, so after saying hello we didn't get in their way. Once sound check was done they came and sat outside with us, writing out and checking their set lists and ribbing each other. The band banter is hilarious at times. They really do get on extremely well and really appreciate what each other brings musically to the band. They love playing together and being in each others company and have really bonded well together and this really comes across in their performance. They have so much fun on stage.
DARCY went down really well with a very appreciative audience too, who danced all evening and thoroughly enjoyed their mixture of well known covers and original music. They even played 6 SaltbushSix songs and I must say I love that album as much as Darcy's Hooked EP.
I had been tasked with the job of official FBC photographer for the evening. The photos didn't turn out as well as I had hoped they would. Luckily Ian has managed to save a few of them when he edited them.
Darcy Crawford is in the UK for another 6 weeks before heading back to Australia and he has lots of gigs booked in that time. I will next be seeing the band perform their headline spot at FSA Country Music Fest in July and they are appearing at Towerfest this summer too.
If you want to catch a very interesting interview with Darcy talking and singing to Simon Birds live in his radio studio, tune in to the UK Country Music Showcase on Redroad FM on Sunday 7th July between 12pm and 3pm and he will tell you all about what exciting things that are coming up for him.
