Carly Connor EP - Press Release

Glaswegian Singer/Songwriter and rising alt-country star Carly Connor to release her uniquely titled debut EP, The Goldie Hawn Stole My Guitar on 21st June.

Carly’s EP is a real song writing journey which has it all from dark to light to humour to heartache. Rootsy country storytelling at its best and delivered with a sandpapered soulful voice.

Lead single The Goldie Hawn Stole My Guitar was released earlier in May to some rave reviews and soared up the UK country music charts. The self-penned song is about a struggling musician having to take her beloved guitar to the pawn shop to afford her rent whilst chasing her dream. Asked if this was based on her own experiences Carly said, “I, like a lot of other dreamers was daft enough to take the struggling musician route in life...I mean it’s really fulfilling and you get to do what you love as a job but it’s not exactly easy on the pocket so something had to give and my guitar was the most valuable possession I had...I got her back but!”

The 2nd track Carabelle, is a rousing hook filled country anthem that tells the story of two friends from the past who have taken different paths in life and Semolina and Cyanide is what it says on the tin, a dark satirical tale of slowly poisoning an abusive other half.

Greenock Hotel is a heart-breaking tale of a regular ‘visitor’ to Greenock Prison. This track was written for Carly by songwriters Ian W Brown and Nicole Taylor (screenwriter of the recent hit country music movie Wild Rose). They first saw Carly perform last year in London when she supported Irish actress and country singer Jessie Buckley (who stars as Rose-Lynn Harlan in Wild Rose). Brown said, “I think Carly breathes life into this bitter sweet anthem to the tragedy of prison.”

26 year-old Carly was raised in Glasgow’s tough housing scheme of Easterhouse and earned her musical stripes as a young teen playing tiny working men's pubs and clubs, not unlike some of the great Glaswegians before her such as Maggie Bell, Frankie Miller, Lulu and Paulo Nutini. After being signed to Warner Records at aged 17, Carly spent some time in Nashville, ‘Music City’, where she unlocked her love of the grittier side of Country Music, working with songwriter legends such as Angelo Petraglia (EmmyLou Harris, Kings of Leon), Steve Booker (John Newman, Duffy) and Jim Hogarth (James Morrison, James Bay, Tina Turner), and from there she developed her quirky combo of alternative country and soul which is evident on this EP. Having been described as ‘A Scottish Amy Winehouse in Rhinestones’, it’s true that once you’ve heard and seen Carly, you’ll never forget her. With a voice that rasps and yelps like Janis Joplin, and rages the wild fire of Maria McKee it’s fair to say that with each live performance Carly enhances her reputation as a real storyteller with a natural humour and killer voice winning over new audiences and growing her army of fans. Asked about her forthcoming EP,, Carly says, “It’s been a long time coming. I’ve had a few ups and downs these past few years, but the knocks have just made me stronger and I’ve tried to put all these experiences into my writing. Now I just can’t wait to take these tunes on the road and spill the beans. I just hope none of the poor souls I’ve wrote about come to the gigs coz that would be a pure riddy...I’d need to leave through the back door ;) !!”

Carly is celebrating the EP release with a hometown launch gig at The Record Factory on Friday 21st June and can also be seen opening for ‘Wild Rose’ actress and country singer Jessie Buckley, at her two sold out Glasgow shows on the 26th and 27th June at St Lukes.

The Goldie Hawn Stole My Guitar EP will be available across all digital platforms on 21st June 2019.
